Directed by Aggressive and in partnership with ATM Virtual, Pixel Race, Mriya Production and Tigrelab, Murals, is an immersive visual experience that uses cutting-edge 3D scanning to place viewers face to face with the war devastation in Ukraine. The not-for-profit art project follows captures of Banksy’s artwork left on the rubble of people’s homes, schools and infrastructure.
Murals premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and has since earned numerous accolades, including the Audience Award for Best Art and XR at the BFI London Film Festival and Best International Immersive at the Doc Edge Festival.
Other notable recognitions include a Cannes Lions Shortlist, a Bronze Award at the Ciclope Festival, a Bronze Cube at the ADC Awards, a Webby Awards Nomination, one Gold and two Silver awards at the Collision Awards, and two nominations at the AICP Next Awards.
The project was initiated by Artem Ivanenko, a 3D artist from Irpin, Ukraine, which was one of the first towns to be hit during the Russian invasion. Later, when the Russian troops withdrew, Ivanenko returned to Irpin to record the devastating destruction using 3D scanning.
Murals opened at the Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim. Those in attendance included the heads of the Polish Film Institute, Cannes Next, European Film Commission and Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.
Through festivals and museum exhibits, Murals screened to audiences in France, UK, Poland, Estonia, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, South Korea and the US.
On February 24th, 2024 to mark the 2 year anniversary of the invasion the project was projected simultaneously across embassies and art institutions in 4 cities around the world — Warsaw, DC, Florence and Tallinn.
